Anti-Wrinkle Injections (Botox, Dysport, Nuceiva)

What Are Anti-Wrinkle Injections (Botox, Dysport, Nuceiva)?

Anti-wrinkle injections using Botox, Dysport or Nuceiva help in restoring fullness to the skin and lips, sculpting your cheeks, jaw and chin, correcting wrinkles and folds and diminishing dark under-eye circles.

Generally speaking, these injectables work below the skin’s surface to target the underlying muscle activity, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

Anti-wrinkle injections using Botox, Dysport or Nuceiva is a popular cosmetic procedure for getting rid of facial wrinkles and fine lines giving you a more youthful visage. Anti-wrinkle injections are ideal for anyone who is looking to:

  • Reduce wrinkles between the eyebrows, called frown lines, glabellar lines, or elevens
  • Reduce wrinkles around the eyes, known as crow’s feet
  • Reduce horizontal creases in the forehead
  • Reduce lines at the corners of the mouth
  • Diminish “cobblestone” skin on the chin
  • Soften fine lines and wrinkles
  • Achieve naturally fuller lips with a lip flip
  • Reduce gum show
  • Correct asymmetries
  • Slim the jaw
  • Prevent dimpling in the chin

How Do Anti-Wrinkle Injections Work?

Botulinum Toxin A, a neuromodulator that temporally stops the nerves that cause your muscles to contract and generate fine lines and wrinkles, is the basis of the majority of anti-wrinkle injectables. This neuromodulator family now includes the injectables Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and, most recently, Nuceiva.

Fine lines and wrinkles appear on our faces as we age because of the loss of skin elasticity and continual muscle contraction (frowning, raising of the eyebrows, etc.). Botox, Dysport and Nuceiva relaxes the facial muscles that are the source of the fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, they can be used to lift the brow, open up the eyes, and treat asymmetries like uneven eyebrows. Many people decide to receive Botox, Dysport or Nuceiva "preventatively" because they are aware that they frown, squint, or elevate their eyebrows more often than they'd like.

The Anti-Wrinkle Procedure

Getting Botox, Dysport or Nuceiva takes only a few minutes, about 10-15 minutes in fact. You won’t need anesthesia, you won’t experience any major discomfort and you can return to your regular activities immediately following treatment.

Before the treatment, our medical professional will carefully evaluate your face and your facial movements to help give you the best treatment outcome. A health assessment will be conducted, and your medical history will be discussed during your consultation.

Our injector will start by disinfecting the treatment area and asked to make various facial expressions for the injector to better understand your desired goals. A very fine microneedle will be used to administer small injections into the appropriate muscle locations.

Post-Treatment Care

Once your session is done, you can carry out your daily activities as usual. Your medical professional will also discuss a treatment timeline, where you can come back for more sessions, that will help you maintain the outcome as well as optimize your treatment results. A consistent treatment schedule will help you maintain your youthful look and avoid the appearance of facial lines or wrinkles again. Remember to keep in mind the following post-care tips that will help the injected botulinum toxin to settle in your facial muscles properly without any interruption:

The skin-smoothening effects of a Botox treatment are visible within days after administration, and they generally last for three to four months depending on the patient. We recommend that our patients visit our clinic for their Botox treatment once every three months or as soon as they notice that the effects of the treatment have worn off.

You can expect to see initial results of Botox treatment within 3-5 days, and a complete result within 14 days.

Patients are always advised to have a clean and makeup-free skin for at least 24 hours after Botox procedure, because when applying makeup, one will have to touch or rub their face. This can cause the Botox that is sitting in the skin of the facial muscles to spread to nearby muscles, causing eyelids drooping or other side effects.

In general, Botox lasts around three to four months. You will need follow-up sessions to maintain the results. There will certainly be cases where it may last longer or shorter than the average duration i.e., 3-4 months.

Botox is a minimally invasive and painless procedure. The needles used to inject in these procedures are very small and will only give a little pinch-like sensation when injected. Even without a numbing agent, the pain is minimal.

There will be minor discomfort or bruising after the treatment but should improve within a week. Other side effects include headache, neck pain, tiredness, rash, itching, inflammation of the eyelids and dry eyes.
