What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a cosmetic procedure in which a skin-safe chemical solution is applied to the skin to exfoliate and improve its texture, tone, and appearance. With varying peel depths to address different skin concerns, it eliminates the outermost layer of skin, resulting in the regeneration of new, smoother, and more youthful-looking skin.

Who is a Good Candidate for Chemical Peel?

Good candidates for a chemical peel typically have specific skin concerns and conditions that can benefit from this treatment. They include individuals who:

  • Have concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, uneven skin tone, sun damage, or age spots
  • Generally have healthy skin and are not currently experiencing significant skin infections, lesions, or open wounds
  • Understand the potential benefits and limitations of chemical peels
  • Chemical peels are suitable for various skin types, but the choice of peel and its intensity should match the individual's skin type and concerns

How Do Chemical Peels Work?

Chemical peels work by applying a chemical solution to the skin's surface. Acids like glycolic lactic, salicylic, or trichloroacetic acid, which are present in this solution, dissolve the outermost layer of aging or damaged skin. The amount of exfoliation depends on the depth of the peel. A smoother, more even complexion is the consequence of the old skin peeling off, which encourages the formation of new skin cells.

Chemical peels can treat a number of skin issues, such as sun damage, uneven pigmentation, wrinkles, and acne scars, leaving behind skin that is renewed and revitalized.

  • Keep the skin well-moisturized to maintain barrier function by drinking enough water.
  • Consider a patch test to assess skin sensitivity to the chemical peel.
  • Avoid physical and chemical exfoliants for at least one week prior.
  • Avoid sun exposure.
  • Avoid any professional facials or skin treatments in the week leading up to the peel.
  • Limit heat exposure such as hot baths, saunas, and steam rooms.
  • Switch to a mild, non-irritating cleanser a week prior to minimize skin irritation.
  • Apply a hydrating mask in the days leading up to the peel for added moisture.

Post-Treatment Care

For chemical peels, Post-Treatment Care is necessary to promote appropriate healing and maximize outcomes. Depending on the kind and extent of the peel, the particular directions may change, however the following post-care recommendations are generally applicable:
