As a medical esthetician, one of the questions I get asked all the time is: “What’s the big deal with red light therapy, and does it actually work?”
And honestly? I get it. It’s everywhere right now. You see it on social media, in skincare clinics, in wellness spaces, and even in at-home masks. So, it’s easy to wonder if it’s just another trend or something truly worth adding to your routine.
The truth is, red light therapy can be a beautiful addition to your skincare journey, but like most things in aesthetics, it works best when you understand what it can realistically do.
So, what is red light therapy?
Red light therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red or near-infrared light on the skin. It’s designed to support the skin at a cellular level, which is why it’s often used for things like skin rejuvenation, calming inflammation, and supporting overall skin health.
One of the reasons people love it so much is because it’s gentle, relaxing, and there’s no downtime. It feels like one of those treatments that lets you do something nice for your skin without being too intense.
Does it actually work?
Yes, it can. But I always like to keep expectations realistic.
Red light therapy is not magic, and it’s not going to transform your skin overnight. What it can do is support your skin in a gradual, gentle way. It may help with the appearance of fine lines, dullness, redness, and overall skin texture, and many clients love it as part of a consistent treatment plan.
Think of it as a supportive treatment. It’s one of those little extras that can make a difference over time, especially when combined with the right skincare and professional guidance.
Why is everyone so obsessed with it?
Because it’s easy to love.
It’s painless, soothing, and feels a little luxurious while still having real skincare benefits. For clients who want treatments that are gentle and non-invasive, red-light therapy is often a favourite. It fits beautifully into facials and skin treatments because it gives the skin that calm, refreshed, happy feeling afterward.
And let’s be honest, we all love a treatment that feels relaxing and sounds high-tech.
What can red light therapy help with?
Depending on the person and the treatment plan, red light therapy may help support:
- Skin rejuvenation
- The appearance of fine lines
- Redness and inflammation
- Overall glow and skin health
- Post-treatment calming support
What it won’t do
This is the part that matters too.
Red light therapy is amazing, but it’s not a miracle fix. It’s not going to replace a full skincare routine, and it’s not meant to solve every skin concern on its own. The best results usually come when it’s part of a bigger plan that’s tailored to your skin.
My honest take as a medical esthetician
I think red light therapy deserves a lot of the love it gets, when it’s used the right way.
It’s one of those treatments I love because it’s gentle, comforting, and supportive for so many skin types. It may not be the most dramatic treatment in the room, but it can absolutely be one of the most feel-good additions to your routine.
